A well-built deck should still work after the sun goes down. Knowing how to add deck lighting is less about placing as many fixtures as possible and more about creating a controlled, comfortable glow that makes stairs safer, defines the deck’s architecture, and extends the hours you can use the space. Start With the Purpose of Your Deck Lighting

Before choosing fixtures, decide what the lighting needs to accomplish. A deck used for quiet evenings may need subtle perimeter lighting and a few step lights. A low-voltage system typically includes fixtures, low-voltage cable, weather-rated connectors, and a transformer that converts household power to a safer low-voltage output. The transformer should be sized for the total fixture load with room for future additions. Choosing the smallest possible transformer may save a little upfront, but it can prevent you from adding lights later without rebuilding the system.

Voltage drop matters on large decks and multi-level installations. When cable runs are long, fixtures at the far end can appear dimmer if wire gauge, run length, and load are not properly calculated. A professional installer accounts for this during the design phase, sometimes using heavier-gauge wire or separate runs to maintain consistent brightness.

The transformer location also deserves attention. It should be accessible for service but visually discreet, protected from direct weather exposure where possible, and close enough to a suitable power source. Build Lighting Into Railings, Stairs, and Framing
